Conducting this investigation provided an answer to the question “does a correlation exist between race and the number of students on free and reduced lunch in Hillsborough county?”. In order to figure out the answer to this question, data was collected from a Hillsborough county report that focused on different statistics about the residents of Hillsborough county. The U.S. census was also utilized in order to gather the data. The population numbers of White, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, and Asian students attending Hillsborough county were recorded as well as the number of students of each race that are eligible for free and reduced lunch. This data was inputted into an excel sheet and a correlation coefficient test was performed through the excel sheet. The results as well as the data was then depicted in a scatter plot. The results of the investigation highlight the fact that there is a strong relationship between race and the eligibility of students who receive free and reduced lunch.
