COURSE PROJECTS AND ASSIGNMENTS

SEARCH ENGINE ASSIGNMENT: Due October 9th.

Perform 5 subject searches, representing different subject areas, using 4 different Web search engines (such as AltaVista, Infoseek, Lycos, Yahoo, Excite, etc.) Compare your search results on the basis of number of hits, relevance of resources found, the quality of resources, and origin of resources (listserv postings, USENET postings, Web sites, etc.) Can you make any generalizations about the suitability of specific search engines for particular types of subject matter?

LIBRARY WEB PAGES ASSIGNMENT: Due October 30th

Locate 3 library Web pages and do a content analysis. Consider the following questions in your analysis.
    1. What types of library-specific information is provided?
    2. What types of external links are provided and how are these organized for the user?
    3. Are there graphics? Do they substantially contribute to the purpose of the page?
    4. Are there multimedia resources or links to multimedia resources? Do they substantially add to the purpose of the page?
What do you like best? The least? What would you do differently if you were designing the Web page?

INTERNET RESOURCES PROJECT: Due November 20th

The project will consist of an annotated, Web-based guide to resources in a specific subject area available on the Internet. You are encouraged to do this assignment as a group project with 2-4 students per group. You should provide a short printed handout (1-2 pages) that includes some of the best resources that could be used as a handout to encourage use of the Web page by library patrons and turn in a disk containing your Web page. Demonstrations and reports on the projects will be done on Dec. 4th.
