COURSE DESCRIPTION

Principles of the organization of knowledge emphasizing descriptive cataloging, the use of LCSH and Library of Congress Classification, and searching of the OCLC Online Union Catalog.

3. At least two 3 1/2 inch diskettes. Formatted for IBM.

GRADES

Grades will be based upon a midterm (30%), a paper (30%), and a final (40%). Work not turned in on time may be penalized for lateness.

COURSE GOALS

    1. To gain a thorough understanding of the catalog and its functions.
    2. To gain a working knowledge of the rules of descriptive cataloging.
    3. To gain a working knowledge of Library of Congress Subject Headings and the Library of Congress Classification schedules.
    4. To be able to search the OCLC online union catalog.
    5. To understand the variable fields of a MARC record and be able to do basic field tagging.

PAPER

Your paper may be on any subject related to cataloging in any type of library that you choose. You may use any standard style sheet. Be sure to make appropriate endnotes or footnotes to the literature used in preparation of the paper and include a bibliography. The paper should be around 8-12 pages in length. DUE:

	Homework: OCLC/Prism tutorial.  
	It is located on all computer stations in lab.  It
	should take about 30 minutes to an hour to complete.  
	In addition, do complete exercises 16,44-45,50-51,63-64.


13.  	OCLC and Review – November 19th

	Take-home final distributed tonight .
	Due in 2 weeks at the beginning of the 
	class period on Dec. 3rd.


14.  	November 26th – No class, work on take-home exam
