COURSE PROJECTS AND ASSIGNMENTS

TERM PAPER: The paper can be on any subject pertaining to the cataloging and/or classification of library materials. It does not have to deal with an area covered in the course. (Term papers should be 15-20 typed pages, double-spaced.) Due April 15th

PROJECT: In lieu of a term paper, you may undertake a project which deals with cataloging or classification in some manner. One example of an acceptable project would be to write a procedure manual for a cataloging department. Substitution requires approval in advance. Due April 15th

INFORMATIVE ABSTRACTS/CRITIQUES: The bibliography provided with the syllabus contains citations arranged according to subjects. Choose 2 subject areas. In each subject area, read at least two articles to abstract and critique (about 3-5 pages, double-spaced for both of the 2 abstract/critique assignments). Due dates are indicated in class calendar below.

PRESENTATION: Short talk (10-15 min.) about a system of classification or indexing other than DDC or LC. A list of possible classification schemes follows is provided as part of the syllabus. For those classification schemes marked with an asterisk, you may choose to work with one other person and present jointly. Be prepared beginning February 25th. I generally do down the list that follows since there is some organization there -- from general classification schemes to more specialized (by format, particular library or subject) approaches.
