In 1993 the functional morphology labs of Peter Wainwright (Florida State University), Timothy Tricas (Florida Institute of Technology) and Philip Motta (University of South Florida) met for the first FISH meeting. These local meetings have occurred annually with growing attendance. The meetings are intended to provide a venue for graduate students in our labs to practice their scientific talks before attending national meetings, bounce research ideas of their fellow students and professors, and see what other similar research labs in Florida are doing. When Wainwright and Tricas moved out of state Drs. Ralph Turingan (FIT) and Stephen Kajiura (Florida Atlantic University) joined the forum. In 2007 Dr. Dan Huber (University of Tampa) joined the meetings. In all, some 26 student talks were presented in 2007. These meetings rotate among the three universities with local graduate students organizing and hosting the meeting. After a day or two of talks the participants gather at the house of the resident faculty member and enjoy a picnic and social. Numerous nationally and internationally recognized ichthyologists got their first presentation experience at these FISH meetings. |
