What should I review for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Examination?

Well ... a good question!

You should expect multiple choice questions with four alternatives for each. Some will test your knowledge of counseling and others rehabilitation/diability issues, and you must pass both sections to become a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). You should visit the CRC Examination Web Site for information on application deadlines, fees, educational requirements, etc.

Remember This:

THE CRC EXAMINATION WAS NOT DESIGNED TO ALLOW A SELECT FEW TO ENTER THE PROFESSION.

Rather, it was created to be sure that individuals obtaining the highest credential in Rehabilitation Counseling were not only knowledgeable about the field, but also able to evaluate and process information about counseling issues, assessment, case planning, medical problems, ethical practice, and other professionally relevant materials in careful and considered ways.

What does that mean?

It means you must fully consider all aspects of the situation presented in every question. Critical thinking is the key to passing the examination. Translated into more operational language, it means you must read the stem of the question and alternative choices very carefully.

Example #1

What is the first thing to do if a client states ...

The key here is just one word in the stem of the question. All four alternatives will likely be useful or helpful. Many questions will have key words embedded in alternative choices ... effectively ruling them in or out.

Example #2

If you are seeing a client to interpret results of a test, you would want to be certain that ...

Here you will likely have alternatives reflecting conditions generally useful in working with clients, but which is most important when interpreting their test results? That will define the correct answer above alternatives more important in other or more general contexts.

Example #3

A client with ______ (some medical condition) would like to return to his former employment. You have spoken with the physician and the client can safely perform no more than medium work. When you review his employment situation you need to be sure it does not involve lifting more than _____ pounds.

You can't reason your way through this question. As presented, the specific medical condition is irrelevant information. The correct answer requires you to know how job strength requirements are classified.

So beyond knowledge of the field ... remember to read the questions very carefully. In many cases a few key words, in the stem or alternatives, will point to the only correct answer among generally desirable actions for the counselor to take.
