The mounds at Etowah, near Cartersville Georgia, are thought to be similar to other large urban centers of the Mississippian Period, such as Cahokia and Moundville. The mounds at Etowah were likely used between A.D. 1000 and 1500, with the area being habitated from A.D. 950 to as late as A.D. 1550. In 1965 the Etowah Mounds area was designated by the Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. |
