There are 11 mounds at the Spiro
site, which reached its peak population some time between A.D. 900 and
1200. While Spiro was considered to be a major urban center of the
Mississippian period, palisades (to protect the mound(s)) are conspicuously
missing.
The Spiro mounds are part of a larger collection of mounds found in the Arkansas Basin and Ozark Highlands. |
