Bachman, Karen M.  2001.  Garbage and the Potential for Recycling in the Local Schools.   Abstract: The purpose of the following study was to assess current garbage service at many schools in Hillsborough County, Florida and to determine the likelihood of schools implementing a recycling program, either on their own or with the assistance of the school district. In the present study, using solid-waste audits, various school personnel were asked to report on the fullness and emptying frequency of their garbage dumpsters, in order to assess any overages in garbage services.  Additionally, using interviews and surveys, other school personnel were asked their opinions on recycling, motivations to recycling and obstacles.  The results suggest that a significant amount of schools could reduce their garbage service in order to save money annually.  Additionally, most of the schools were very interested in implementing a recycling program or expanding a current one with the assistance of the school district.
