Cannon, Robert R. 1986. - A SURVEY ON CATHOLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION
Abstract: During the second semester of 1984, I did my internship
with the Education Office of the Catholic Diocese of St.
Petersburg, St. Petersburg, Florida. The purpose of this
internship was to conduct a survey on Catholic school education.
The intent of the survey was to generate a local operational data
base to be used for both immediate and long range planning. From
sixty-six parish sites, 65,303 questionnaires were returned. A
number of significant trends emerged from the data. One, the
Catholic laity in the Diocese of St. Petersburg are highly
supportive of Catholic school education. This support was
expressed both in attitudinal and monetary terms. Two, Catholic
schools are viewed as a diocesan priority. Three, the clergy are
perceived as strong supporters of Catholic school education.
Four, religious instruction and formation, good learning
atmosphere, and discipline were the three primary reasons given
to send a child to a Catholic school. Five, high tuition and
unavailability were the two primary reasons not to send a child
to a Catholic school. Six, these trends held true regardless of
parish or constituency.
Recommendations based on the data were subsequently given to the
Diocese of St. Petersburg to be used in its planning for Catholic
school education in the Diocese.
