Detres, Maridelys.  2001.  Promoting Health Among Farmworker Women: A Facilitator’s Guide for Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention.  Abstract:  This thesis describes the internship that took place at the Moffitt Cancer and Research Center, Division of Cancer Control and Education from August to December 1998 under the project “Let’s Talk About Your Health!” The main purpose of this project was to create a video and a facilitator’s guide.  The guide was designed to accompany a video to increase awareness for the need for cancer screening among Mexican farm worker women in Hillsborough County. The internship involved the development of a facilitator’s guide for the video and included presenting Mexican farm workers’ ideology regarding breast and cervical cancer prevention, incorporating information about risk behavior and biomedical messages of cancer causation, and establishing a Community Advisory Committee.  The methodology followed the four steps of the  “Framework for Health Communication”: formative research (literature and focus groups), selection channels and materials, development of materials (translation and community feedback) and pre-testing of the instrument.  The internship resulted in the creation of a bilingual facilitator’s guide addressing concerns surrounding breast and cervical cancer screening in female Mexican farm workers.  This internship responded to the agency by creating an educational tool that could be replicated in future projects and addressed the needs expressed by the target population.  The internship product was enriched through the application of medical anthropology theory and methods to develop culturally specific health messages.
